An Ancient Beast

An Ancient Beast

“Horse and Groom” from the Eastern Han dynasty (A.D. 25-220) on display at the Metropolitan Museum of art in the exhibit “The Age of Empires”. This large bronze sculpture illustrates one of the magnificent beasts, characterized by an arching neck, firm legs and stocky haunches, that Han diplomate Zhang Qian discovered in Dawan, an ancient kingdom in Modern Uzbekistan. The horse’s pointed ears and flared nostrils exude vigor.
