I still love shooting with my 35mm film cameras. Here is a shot from Rockefeller Center taken with my Olympus OM2-n and the Zuiko 40mm f2.0 lens on Ilford XP2-400 film. I think film still handles strong contrasts better than most digitals.

Rock Silhouettes

Back to some shots with the Olympus Pen E-p1 and the 17mm pancake lens. I find the E-p1 to function very nicely in low light circumstances, and shooting RAW you have a lot of control over the dynamic range. In this shot the background was very bright while the foreground was fairly dimly lit. By adjusting the curves I managed to get detail in both areas.

The Lumix LX3 performs very nicely during night photography. Here is an example taken from the top of the GE building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. It was taken basically hand-held, just with my elbow leaning on a fence. The very effective image stabilization combined with the fast 24mm lens allows for good performance under low-light conditions.

Rockefeller Center Stairs

The Olympus Trip 35, a manual film camera from the 1970’s, and another one of my favorite instruments, does an excellent job at low-light photography. The trick is to set the camera on manual at f2.8 and the shutter will fire at 1/40 sec. With 400 ISO film most shots will come out beautifully. Here is an example of a stairway at Rockefeller Center in New York City., shot with the Trip on Fuji Superia 400 film.
