For traveling light I love to take my little Lumix LX3. It has a razor sharp Leica lens, which at f2.8 performs beautifully in low light. It is very versatile with 24-60mm zoom (35mm equivalent)

The Commuter

Grand Central terminal

Grand Central terminal

Grand Central Terminal is a wonderful place for photography in terms of architecture, light, people and perspectives. In this instance I was intrigued by the perspective and light of this passage way when a single commuter calmly strolled by, giving me the focus point I needed.

Taken with my Olympus Pen E-p2 and a Lumix 20mm f1.7 lens. I post-processed from RAW with Color Efex Pro, simulating Fuji Superia 200 film.

During my trip to the Netherlands this summer I only took my Lumix LX3 with me. It is one of my favorite travel cameras because of it’s size, weight and versatility. It performs beautifully in low light, as the example here shows, taken in a fairly dark Dutch Reformed church in Schoonhoven.

Rainy Romance on Bow Bridge

Couple on Bow Bridge in Central Park

Couple on Bow Bridge in Central Park

Rainy day light can be challenging and also satisfying. I was out in the rain with my Lumix LX3 when I saw this couple on Bow Bridge in Central Park. The light was not ideal, but I took one shot. Later I took the RAW file and created three files with three different exposures. These three I then combined with HDR software into the image you see here.

Top of the Rock

The Lumix LX3 performs very nicely during night photography. Here is an example taken from the top of the GE building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. It was taken basically hand-held, just with my elbow leaning on a fence. The very effective image stabilization combined with the fast 24mm lens allows for good performance under low-light conditions.

For this shot I was lucky enough to get on the balcony of one of the buildings across the street from the UN. The light was at a perfect angle creating both reflections and shadows on the UN building in New York City. Taken with the Lumix LX3 and perspective corrected in Photoshop.

Speeding through DC

Washington DC Metro

Shooting in the Washington Metro System was a joy. I love the structured arches and the way a train casts a shadow when passing through the station. The Lumix LX3 is a perfect low-light camera in these situations. Here is an example.
